As thousands of Brits prepare to bet on tomorrow’s Grand Prix, here’s how punters can get into pole position…
Silverstone has been the location for some remarkable moments in Formula 1 history. And tomorrow, the millions of fans tuning in to watch the British Grand Prix might just witness another.
Five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is heading into Sunday’s event in a bid to win his home race for a record sixth time. And the good news is that if he wins, so could you!
Sports fans are preparing to have a serious punt on the outcome of the race, and many are backing the 34-year-old to write his record win into the sport’s history books.
But it’s not just the outright race winner punters are making predictions on – online bookmaker The Pools is also offering bets on which driver will record the fastest lap, or even whether a safety car will be sent out during the race.
As a nation, we gamble £14.5billion every year – that’s a staggering £459 every second. And online betting has made it easier than ever as you can now place bets in seconds from your smartphone.
Today, almost 20% of punters place bets online, with more than half using their mobiles to bet on everything from football to handball.
This means players can even place a bet midway through live events.
And it’s giving family and friends the opportunity to bet alongside one another as the action unfolds on the screen.
The good news is that even if you’ve never placed a bet, it’s easy to join in the fun. We’ve produced a helpful beginner’s guide to placing a bet with The Pools – a new online bookmaker from the historic Football Pools brand.
And if you’re a little short of time to start studying the form guide in time for this year’s British Grand Prix, we’ve asked the experts at The Pools to do it for you.
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO BETTING
Here’s how to place your bets:
Step 1: Visit thepools.com to create an account before you can place a bet and confirm that you’re over 18.
Step 2: After you have deposited funds into your account, select ‘Sports’ to find the latest odds. Odds are shown as fractions. The number on the left of the fraction should be treated as A and the number on the right as B. For every value of B pledged (known as your stake) you’ll earn A if you win. This amount, including your original stake, is called returns.
Step 3: Select at least one bet to load the bet slip on the right of the page. Type in your stake to see potential earnings.
Step 4: You can collect any winnings by going to your account and selecting the ‘Withdraw’ option.

Here, Jonathan Blackledge delivers his top Silverstone tips and what you can win if you placed £10 on any one of these bets.*
Hamilton to win — 6/10
Hamilton is a Silverstone superstar and is in flawless form too, having wonsix of the opening nine races of this season.
A safety car (not a virtual) — 1/2
A string of high-speed corners at Silverstone tests drivers to their limits. At least two safety cars made an appearance last year, so could happen again.
Hamilton not to finish — 7/1
He’s finished every race so far this season, but was involved in a first-lap collision last year and returned to the action, so never say never…
Fastest-lap Vettel — 5/1
Vettel’s Ferrari is arguably one of the quickest cars on the grid and could be rewarded with a bonus point if he gets the fastest lap time.
